VERONICA ARIA GRIMM
Martha and Carl Grimm were the sort of couple that grew up in a little village with no plans on ever leaving. They were attached to their market town and its familiarity and superstitions. The sort of place where everyone knew everyone and they were all family. They were best friends since they were small turned high school sweethearts. The picture perfect romance that resulted in a young marriage and their first child before Martha was even twenty. But that was fine and dandy by them. Carl was a working man doing handyman jobs around town and working with the local festivals whenever they were put on. They made enough to get by. They were comfortable with the two of them and little Thomas, who a year later became Thomas and Sebastian, and then two years following became Thomas, Sebastian and Robert. Sometimes money was tight and twice they had to expand their little house to make more room but they always managed to get by. They were the calm and happy sort of family that didn’t really have much trauma to it. Their live was simple and happy and didn’t change when they gave birth to what would be their first daughter and last child.
She was different from the start. The pregnancy was rougher on Martha. The labor tougher and longer. The baby looked much unlike the others. She had ten fingers and ten toes, two eyes and a nose. But her skin was almost sickly pale but for the red in her face from screaming and her hair was as white as the snow on the mountains. Not much was known about albinism just yet but they knew that this little girl—named Veronica Aria—had the aforementioned pigment disorder. It didn’t really discourage the parents much. It just made her more special to them. They didn’t really realize that it meant having to take extra care with her being outside and having to deal with diminishing eyesight until later on in her life. Veronica had her first severe sunburn at barely even a year old and it scared her parents and brothers into being extra careful. To the boys their baby sister was a princess. They adored her and helped whenever they could, the youngest of the boys being five when Veronica was born. She had a good childhood.
Until school started. By this point Veronica already had a pair of thick glasses and already had to wear sunglasses indoors when the lights were too bright. She was the only one with albinism at her school or even in the village. Despite the close knit community it didn’t stop people from being afraid of what they didn’t understand and reacting with cruelty. The kids in her class were cruel to her, teasing her constantly. She got shoved around, her lunches got stolen, her schoolwork sabotaged. In a room of so many kids it was difficult to notice what was going on, just that Veronica was crying and things (like books or the globe) would fly off of their shelves in her distress. No one ever picked up on the little things that happened when she got upset because they had something else to worry about at the time. Her brothers always came to her rescue and they taught her to be strong. Taught her not to show them that it bothered her.
The summer after turning eleven a peculiar letter came for Veronica from a school her parents had never heard of. It seemed like a hoax at first but Martha and Carl very much believed in magic and fantasy and fairytales. They very much believed that their daughter’s albinism and this peculiar letter had to be linked (despite it being completely unrelated). It was very easy for the family to accept that their daughter was a witch, the only witch in the family of six. Hogwarts has since become Veronica’s home and while she’s still a bit of a recluse she’s grown addicted to the castle and all of the wonderful things inside of it. She feels safe here despite of the things to come.
The Veronica that most people see is very unlike the Veronica that actually exists. She’s one of those people with a somewhat off-putting air. Tending to keep mostly to herself and scarcely speaking up during class and to her peers Veronica gives off an almost arrogant or hateful air. She appears rather cold and when she is speaking to someone doesn’t look them in the eyes which gets misconstrued a lot. Veronica doesn’t mean to come across as cold or rude or arrogant. It’s the opposite of who she is, it’s simply a mix of being unable to look people in the eyes from albinism related complications and a defense mechanism. Growing up in a small mountain muggle village as the only albino wasn’t easy on her. She got teased and bullied a lot so Veroica developed a cold exterior to let people know that she didn’t care what the said. It still hurt but she learned that showing her upsets only made them tease her more. She expects to be teased for her albinism and the quietness and almost two-faced exterior isn’t even something she thinks about doing any more. It just happens. She looks angry at you but she really isn’t.
In reality though, Veronica is a rather sweet young lady. She tries to be a good person. She holds a lot of compassion for others and is a very empathetic person. Veronica can easily put herself in the place of others so be able to relate to their pain. She’s a listener and a rather good one at that though her advice isn’t always the best in the world. But she tries and she can help you feel a little less alone even if she gives rotten advice.
It takes a while for Veronica to open up to people, naturally. She’s timid by nature and her demeanor of hating people often lead to a lot of misunderstandings. She generally sticks to the company of books and while she adores the ability to learn and grow school can be a bit difficult when you’re eyesight isn’t the greatest. She tries and takes the extra steps to study as often as possible, leaving little time for her to attempt to be social. However, she’s a social creature by nature. She likes to learn about not just places and things and spells and history but people as well. She loves to listen to people’s stories. Once Veronica is open and comfortable with you she asks a lot of questions and her quirky side starts to shine. Awkward and adorable and she always means well even if the execution is a bit rubbish. She’s weird and doesn’t quite know who she is just yet but who does at fifteen?
