The night was dark and cool, the clouds drifting over the full moon, lighting the already creepy place with an eerie glow. Joseph walked down the mistreated street of Knockturn alley, head down inconspicuously, his footsteps silent. He looked up and saw the rotten sign to the newest pub, Yanks, and walked through the door.
He threw back his hood and took a seat at the bar, his blue eyes scanning the place observantly. There was no doubt that this bar hosted some of the most shady and nasty people to be found, but Joseph wasn't the least bit intimidated; He was very difficult to frighten, probably because he was very difficult to beat. He was tall and strong, even handsome, unlike many of the scarred or hooded people around him, but as deceiving as appearances could be he was no better than the rest of them.
Joseph ordered a drink from the man behind the counter, feigning the air of an acquaintance; He didn't know the man well, and disliked him greatly, but perhaps he could be useful. Just then Joseph caught the eye of another deceivingly charming person; another death eater had entered the bar.

charlie took a deep sigh of relief. finally a moment of peace. the bar was thriving tonight. it was peak hour on a weekend and full of strange knockturn alley locals. charlie had just been on a marathon of drink making, not having even a moment to take a breath with people ordering by the second. but finally, he found his moment. he ran a hand through his unruly black hair before rolling up the sleeves to his plaid shirt and crossing his arms across his chest. what charlie really relished these moments of relief for, was the use of his legilimens. he picked up some interesting information from a few death eaters who did not have the ability to protect themselves from his ability. he infiltrated their minds, filtering through their despicable thoughts to get some valuable information. this was his sad purpose in life, but he would stop at nothing until he found his revenge. his dark gaze observed the comings and goings of patrons until his stare locked on a shadowy figure entering.
an enchantment above the door caused a small ring to sound every time the door was opened. charlie recognized him instantly by the height and arrogant manner with which this man carried himself. joseph tanner. a death eater. and not just any death eater, he couldn't have been closer to lord voldemort. charlie's heart rate quickened. it was almost as if he was getting closer to voldemort himself just to have the man in his presence. charlie pushed the urge to attack and interrogate this man out of his mind and quickly reminded himself that that was not his strategy. his strategy was infiltration, and for the moment, he was trusted enough to be confronted by this death eater regularly.
"evening, joe," charlie harped, knowing full well that his tone and pleasant manner alone would only sicken the man. he got to work behind the bar and began concocting the death eaters drink. charlie observed the small label-less bottle of colorless, odorless liquid that he always kept at hand on the bar. veritaserum. the most powerful truth serum in the wizarding world. he felt tempted to pour some into tanner's glass and retrieve whatever information he could about the latest comings and goings of voldemort. tanner was, after all, practically the dark lord's second hand man. but it was incredibly risky. joseph was trained to avoid situations like this. he might easily notice.
but charlie had been pretty tired of the lack of information he had been acquiring in the bar lately. he bit his lip and reached for the bottle casually, and used his quick hands to pour a drop of the liquid into tanner's drink. charlie was always reacting too quickly based on his emotions. although he had many many years of training as an auror, he had been out of the action of that profession for a while, and he couldn't help help hoping his actions wouldn't get him killed. this could end in a full out duel in his bar. but it was too late. he was already placing the drink in front of tanner.

Joseph smiled sourly as Anderson spoke to him in a intolerably cheery manner; Begrudgingly ignoring the fact he had been addressed as "Joe". He knew that Charlie could be valuable and that, despite his looks, he was a powerful wizard. He didn't trust the man one bit, and could sometimes tell that he was attempting legillimency, possibly succeeding on the more foolish death eaters. Joseph had his suspicions, and eyed the bar owner as he mixed his drink.
Joseph had noticed a flash of glass as his drink was mixed and wondered at once of the man would be foolish enough to put something in his drink- Veritaserum? It was unknown to some, but it could be fought with Occlumency, and if that failed Joseph would not hesitate to cast a silencing charm upon himself. He nodded to the bar man and lifted the suspicious drink daringly to his mouth, eying Anderson for any sign of anxiety of anticipation.
As the drink trickled down his throat, Joseph felt a strange, almost undetectable sensation wash through him. He blocked the influence of the powerful potion with his well developed Occlumency skills, and though he knew that he would be unable to lie, he was confident he could refrain from answering, perhaps even hedge. He met the Man's eyes from across the bar, a threat, a dare, shining in his own blue eyes.
This was why the Dark Lord trusted him so thoroughly, his skills in these situations were uncanny. Perhaps if he read Charlies actions carefully enough, he could benefit from this run in. He was careful to keep his mind blocked, and was poised to silence himself if worse came to worse. Joseph set his drink down heavily on the table and put his other hand in his robe pocket, resting his fingers on his wand.

charlie moved back and forth between his other patrons seated at the bar, fixing up drinks and serving them to his customers. he pretended that his sole focus was on that very task, but from the corner of his eye he was watching joseph tanner eagerly. the drink was taken. but the battle was not over. he knew how powerful joseph was, the veritaserum would not guarantee him information, but it was worth a try. everyday charlie grew more and more desperate for information. charlie strode back to where joseph sat and stopped in front of him. "so pal, got any excitin' plans tonight?" charlie asked mischievously, unable to hide the grin on his face. joseph was onto him, but he couldn't resist. it was too easy to ruffle his oh-so-serious feathers. besides, charlie was confident in his own abilities and if a full blown duel were to erupt in his bar, well, his wand was always in his back pocket for that reason.
he didn't want to duel, however. joseph was such a plethora of information that he didn't want to make an enemy out of him so soon. mind you, they were both aware of how much they disliked one another, but they kept it civil for their own purposes. charlie thought to himself that perhaps he had information on keira robinson. he obviously wasn't about to divulge where lord voldemort spent his weekends, but keira was another story. joseph might be willing to talk about her. death eaters could be keen on protecting one another, but charlie knew that they were also highly competitive and ruthless with one another at times. maybe he wouldn't care to divulge information about keira, and charlie couldn't resist the urge to find out more about her, and more about the forms that the boggart took when it had taken the shape of keira's worst fears.
"let me ask you, joe," charlie started, leaning forward against the bar, "what do you know about keira robinson? you know, between us guys..." charlie couldn't hide his smile at the suggestion that he and joseph had any kind of camaraderie. it was quite laughable. but he wanted to know more about this girl he had met. how bad of a person could she really be? he knew he would probably regret ever asking once he found out the grimy truth about her life, but charlie just wanted to understand her better, and more than that understand what he was getting himself into. joseph tanner was one of the worst and most brutal of the death eaters, maybe charlie could rest a little easier if joseph didn't have a very high opinion of her? his mind ran in circles trying to justify his relationship to her.

JCharlie tried to act casual, focusing on his work as if it were the only thing in the world; He was a surprisingly good actor, but Joseph wasn't phased. He smirked as he thought of the mind games he would be able to play with Charlie. He looked up innocently as Charlie approached him, acting natural as well. Just another night at the bar. No dark mark concealed by his cloak, no veritaserum, no annoying bartender trying to pry secrets out of him.
"So, pal, any plans tonight?" the man asked casually. It was pathetic, what did he expect to hear? Oh just some torturing, and then meeting with Lord Voldemort at Riddle Manor. No way, even Anderson wasn't that stupid. He was just testing the waters. "Oh, just a night out, maybe meet with some friends" he said, toying with Charlie for his own amusement. His next question did surprise the Young Death Eater; Joseph had expected to be asked about locations, dates, plots- not about arrogant girls.
"Let me ask you, joe, what do you know about keira robinson? you know, between us guys..." he asked, and Joseph grimaced- Joe. He wondered what answer Anderson was wanting to hear, was he looking for dirt on her? "Keira?" he asked, now testing the waters for himself, analyzing Charlies every reaction. "Not too much, but she's pathetic" he replied, and he saw the slightest bit of- what pleasure? Satisfaction?- flash in Anderson's eyes. So he was wanting to hear about how she was an unusually weak and merciful death eater? He wasn't extremely far off, although she was not a little angel either as most people tended to assume. Strange, perhaps they had a relation.
"I mean, how can someone get so much pleasure in other peoples pain?" he added, disgust seeping into the lie,"I mean some people- understandable, but her own colleges?". He had done a good job in the lie, a difficult feat with the varitaserum in his system. He could feel his energy waning from it, time to wrap up and leave the man to the planted thoughts. "But i have plans, sorry, i lost track of time.See ya Andie" he said, standing casually to his full intimidating height. He turned to leave, then faced back towards Anderson.
Joseph placed his palms flat on the bar, and leaned in so only Charlie could hear him. "And be careful, pal. There are some people in this bar that would murder you without batting an eye if given a reason." he added, low voiced and threatening. No matter how beneficial the man may be, he had crossed the line, and next time would be the last. With that he smirked in a way that from a far could be considered friendly, and then stalked towards the exit of the bar and the bitter cold night.

pathetic. that was tanner's opinion of her. okay, maybe she wasn't so bad after all, then. from what charlie understood joseph tanner was the cruellest of the cruel, so if he thought someone weak and pathetic they couldn't have been nearly as evil as he was. I mean, how can someone get so much pleasure in other peoples pain? I mean some people- understandable, but her own colleges... hmm... a sudden change in opinion. charlie eyed joseph suspiciously. clearly he was using his occlumens to fight off the persuasion of the veritaserum. charlie's plan was a long shot. he had never been able to penetrate joseph's mind with his legilimens, but he was hoping the combination of the truth serum would give him some leeway. oh well.
before he knew it, joseph was already making his exit from the bar. charlie was disappointed in himself for not doing better to pry into the mind of this powerful death eater. but on the other hand he had extracted a little information on keira. at least it was clear tanner didn't think very highly of her. his second statements were merely trying to screw with charlie, but what joseph said reminded him that keira was indeed a death eater capable of despicable things. this was a fact that charlie was finding easier and easier to push out of his mind, but he couldn't do that any more.
charlie was startled when joseph abruptly placed his fists on the bar. he stopped and locked his eyes on the death eater as he leaned forward. There are some people in this bar that would murder you without batting an eye if given a reason... charlie couldn't help a small grin forming on the corner of his lips which he tried to suppress. of course there were! although tanner didn't know it, charlie had spent every minute since he moved to london in the company of people who would gladly shoot him an unforgivable curse without a second thought if they knew what he was really up to. his eyes never left joseph and watched him leave the bar. behind his grin, charlie had to admit that no one intimidated him more than tanner, though. he had better watch his step more carefully in the future. he didn't want to end up dead. not yet at least.
THE END.
