The night was getting terrible chilly. And yet Zara was down at the courtyard, sitting on an old bench, staring at the sky. She had never really excelled in Astronomy, and certainly hadn't decided to study it as a core subject, but the stars, constellations and the sky in general fascinated her. It was nice to stare at it in the moonlight, and read the ocassional book or two when time permitted, but her love for astronomy stopped at there.
Taking a deep breath as another cold wind swpet across the courtyard, she pulled her robes tighter around her, not willing to leave as of yet. It was pretty unusual for her to be seen alone, since she loved nothing more than to be surrounded by her friends. But there were these occasional moments where Zara preferred to be left alone. When she got reminded of her mother.
It wasn't as bad as before, when Zara thought of her mother almost all the times. Over the nine years, she had gotten better at overcoming her mother's death. Or rather, masking the sadness. There were times when she just gets all moody, and that was when she sought comfort in loneliness.
She got disturbed from her train of thoughts when she heard a noise just a few feet from her, and looked up to see something. Oh wait, someone. Upon further observation, Zara realised it was Bellatrix Lestrange. Zara bit back a groan. She literally loathed that dark-haired Slytherin, who was tenfold worse than her sister.

• GIVE ME A DISASTER GIVE ME AN EMERGENCY •STAND ME AT THE HEAD OF THE CRUSADE WITHOUT A REMEDY ;Though Defense Against the Dark Arts was Bellatrix’s favorite class, Astronomy came a close third behind Potions. After all she was named after a star like everybody else in her family. A celestial name for every descendent in the black line made their family just that more memorable. She’d headed outside to do some star gazing for class as well as her own curiosity, but now as it got later and later she felt like heading back in to wreak some mischief.
On her way up from the grounds, Bella spotted a mane of dark brown hair and the stench of half-blood. Zara Girard, one of her least favorite Gryffindor’s – not that she had a favorite – sat alone on a bench in the courtyard staring up at the sky. Rolling her eyes, Bella continued on her path and grinned maliciously when Zara glanced her way.
“Wah, wah, wah, my mommy died and now I’m sad!” Bella sneered, knowing the mentioning of Zara’s deceased mother would incite her fury. Anger was such a beautiful emotion. It’s what fueled Bella every day of her life – and of course the cruel need to see others cry. Hell if she could bottle their tears she just might. “Really, Zara, get over it she died like what – nine years ago? Boohoo.”
Not known for her tact or her caring of others feelings Bella rubbed at the bottom of her eyes like a baby would when bawling. It was probably the stupidest thing she’d ever done when taunting one of her fellow classmates, but it was effective. With Zara she didn’t have to do much to make her angry.

Zara gritted her teeth and tried her best to remain calm when she heard Bellatrix's annoying voice. She was taunting her only to get into a fight...Zara should control herself...she didn't need a detention, especailly not because of AND with such a loathsome creature. She closed her eyes and counted to ten like her father taught her to (he had given her that advise when he began getting too many complains from the Professors).
But it wasn't working. Bellatrix was taunting her with her mother's death. That was never excusable. Never. "Got lost, Black. We all know you never knew a mother's love completely. That's why you turned out like this," she sneered. She wasn't sure if she'd ever hit a sore point with Bellatrix Black when she talks of family. Nothing seemed to concern the girl. She was too full of herself.
"Why don't you go rot alone like you should? Instead of bothering normal, civilised people with emotions like myself?" she suggested, her hand going into her robes to grip her wand just in case. One always had to be prepared when talking to someone as psychotic as Bellatrix.

Please, Won't You Push Me For The Last Time? I'll Scream Until There's Nothing Left Sirius was strolling through the castle, trying to ease his mind. He had been through a rough week, and still looked like crap, as bad as he felt. He was nearing the castles Entrance hall when hhe saw Narcissa heading his direction with a group if Slytherins. He quickly slipped out the large doors and into the court yard.
He took up his stroll, walking fairly fast, when he heard his cousins annoying voice around the corner, catching his attention. Bellatrix. "Wah, wah, wah, my mommy died and now I’m sad!”. Sirius gritted his teeth, the girl had no boundaries. How could someone stand to be so cold and cruel? Not wanting a fight at the moment he turned to walk the other way, but her next taunt stopped him in his tracks. “Really, Zara, get over it she died like what – nine years ago? Boohoo.”
Sirius spun around, suddenly livid, all the anger at himself and Zara over the past few days flowing through him as well, but this time directed towards his cousin.Sirius remembered the sadness that had lit her eyes that first day at the river. How could anyone use that as a weapon?
He smiled wryly as Zara retorted about Bella never knowing a mothers love, knowing it was the best, or worst, thing for Bellatrix to hear. He appeared silently around the corner; Bellatrix's back was to him. "She's right, of course Bella" he said with a smirk, "Even if you don't show it, you know that your just a trophy daughter, that your dear mother wouldn't shed a tear if you died tomorrow. If you ran away she would blast you off the tree without a second thought."
Sirius knew he was being cruel, but if anyone deserved it, it was Bellatrix. It felt good to let his anger all out, "She doesn't care about you. Nobody does. Even your relationship with 'Cissy' is corrupt." His smirk faded, and his voice became dangerously low "So tell my, how dare you use the love of a mother torn away, the love you will never have, against someone?" He drew his wand with a hand shaking with rage. Nobody- nobody would talk to Zara that way. No matter what. Especially not Bellatrix Devaney Black.

You'll never bring me down, And I'm feeling ok
Zara was just about to draw her wand and hex Bellatrix just for the fun of it. She was gettin angrier by the second and she needed to vent her frustrations. Who else to vent on than Bellatrix Black? Black did that to others all the time. She might get caught by a Professor...but detention be damned.
Before she could as much as wave her wand, she heard someone's voice. Sirius' voice. She didn't know whether to run away, not wanting to meet him, or stay and involve him in this. She didn't need to decide, though. He was already insulting Bellatrix, getting himself involved. Zara resisted an urge to roll her eyes; he was never one to back down, especially from his cousins, was he?
But the tone of his voice surprised her. So defensive. Defending her. She was not sure whether she was happy that he was sticking up for her, or annoyed that he thought she needed some kind of saving. She was no damsel-in-distress. She could handle Bellatrix.
"Defending me, Sirius? How nice. Why are you doing this, again?" she asked him. He was the one who had proclaimed to the world that it was over between them. Then why try to defend her? "And you," she spat at Bellatrix. "Get out of my sight before I kill you and do the world a favour."

Please, Won't You Push Me For The Last Time? I'll Scream Until There's Nothing Left "Defending me, Sirius? How nice. Why are you doing this, again?" Sirius was taken aback by Zara's words, and he tried not to let any pain flash in his dark eyes. What had he expected, a happy welcome, her to be glad to see him, the past forgotten? No. He his only thought had been anger at Bellatrix and a loyalty to Zara; After all, feelings didn't just disappear with a few angry words. He hadn't even thought about if Zara would want him there or not, she certainly didn't need him, and now he was wondering if it was a mistake to get involved. Oh well, now they were stuck with him and his angry emotions.
He didn't take his eyes off of his cousin as he considered how to reply. He was torn between bitter sarcasm for the hurtful way she had spoken to him, or sincerity about the fact he cared too much about her well being and Bella's suffering to walk away. He considered not answering, anything he said would be warped by Bellatrix anyway, and decided for that path. He just met Zara's eyes with his, as if trying to convey all the muddled feelings with a glance. Anger, sadness, guilt, confusion... He had made a mistake to answer that way- it had broken his watch on Bellatrix.

• GIVE ME A DISASTER GIVE ME AN EMERGENCY •STAND ME AT THE HEAD OF THE CRUSADE WITHOUT A REMEDY ;Bella laughed at Zara’s attempt to dissuade her interest. Boredom could be a cruel master and at that moment the castle and all its little insects held no fancy for her. She’d done it all, cursed them in some way or another the past five years, but bringing Zara down to a pathetic little crying mess always left her feeling – good – at the end of the day. Maybe it was because the little wench was just another pawn in her cousins brainwashing or maybe it was simply because Bellatrix hated everyone. When you’re not loved the only option is to hate everyone.
"Get lost, Black. We all know you never knew a mother's love completely. That's why you turned out like this," A mother’s love wasn’t what she’d needed. Loving others was a weakness, it would make her weak. To love was to destroy – so she would destroy them all. Watch them burn and dance on their ashes with a smile on her face because Love would never win. If it did she would fall – fail – and that was not acceptable.
“Oh I got love as a child,” Bella didn’t let much get to her and the comment about her mother – though annoying – didn’t faze her much. She’d been taught a certain way; she didn’t know anything else so how could she miss what she didn’t know? “I just didn’t need to be coddled like you apparently do.”
"Why don't you go rot alone like you should? Instead of bothering normal, civilized people with emotions like myself?"
“Because you don’t feel enough – at least – not the right emotions. I’m just doing my civic duty to instill all of you with the proper emotions.” So she was spouting a load of crap because no matter if they shared her love for cruelty or not Zara and those like her would always be lesser in comparison.
"She's right, of course Bella" Sirius said with a smirk, "Even if you don't show it, you know that you’re just a trophy daughter, that your dear mother wouldn't shed a tear if you died tomorrow. If you ran away she would blast you off the tree without a second thought."
Bella practically shook she was so livid at hearing Sirius’s voice. Spinning around to stare at her disappointment of a relative, her eyes narrowed as her hand closed around her wand. Just the sight of him made her want to hex his face off. He was almost worse than her good for nothing sister.
“You were the one who ran away,” She shrugged. “I’m not the disappointment in this family. If anyone doesn’t have the love of a mother it’s you, Sirius. Mother cares in her own way for me and Cissy.”
What did he know about how families should treat each other? She and Cissy were close, her parents were there enough for her, and she had power – what more did she need?
"She doesn't care about you. Nobody does. Even your relationship with 'Cissy' is corrupt." His smirk faded, and his voice became dangerously low "So tell me, how dare you use the love of a mother torn away, the love you will never have, against someone?"
Bellatrix laughed. “Love is a useless emotion. It will get you nowhere – except to that bench where you can cry about how sad you are in your pathetic little life because your mother died. While you do that I’ll be moving on with my life and making sure you see every second of it.”
Sirius had his wand out as if that would do anything. Duels didn’t frighten Bella. Her fears were far harder to pinpoint than that. For now though she’d hold off, see if she could drive them to madness simply by verbally sparring with them.
It seemed she didn’t have to incite either of them any more than she already had as Zara turned on Sirius. Her spineless threat of killing Bellatrix did nothing to unsettle her stomach or make her quake in fear. In fact, she was about ready to sit back and watch the two of them take each other’s heads off. The opportunity was far too tempting to pass up on when Sirius turned to his unrequited love and ignored her. How could she pass up his mistake?
“Avis.” Bellatrix whispered before continuing with: “Oppugno.”
Birds burst from her wand and began to dive bomb both Sirius and Zara. It amused her to see birds that most would consider adorable becoming vicious little demons. Anything could be corrupted if given enough direction.

Zara could see Sirius was suffering in silence. He badly wanted to retort to her, to hurt her with words the way she was hurting him. She could see it very clearly, and was even daring him to do so. But to her surprise, he held his tongue. She only felt more guilty now. She was throwing words at him and he wasn't. Why couldn't he just let it go and lash out at her already?!
Maybe he was manipulating the situation so that she would indeed feel guilty.
But before she could analyse more of his said manipulation, she caught his eye. The emotions swirling in them caught her off-guard, and of course the vile girl Sirius called his cousin had to take advantage of the situation like the cowardly freak she was. Before she knew it, yellow canaries were attacking her. She never knew getting hurt by canaries could hurt this much.
"Argh!" she shrieked, and whipped out her wand to cast the counter-curse, effectively getting rid of the canaries. "Coward! Why don't you fight when people are paying attention to you?! You psychotic, dumb...UGH!" she shouted, losing her anger. The next thing she knew, she was casting a horribly powerful Bat-Bogey Hex at Bellatrix. "There you go, it'll fit you so perfectly! Make you look better, even!" she yelled.

Please, Won't You Push Me For The Last Time? I'll Scream Until There's Nothing Left Before Sirius could react, he was under fire from a group of tiny birds, and though they looked pleasant, the sensation of tiny beaks tearing at your skin was not. He couldn't believe he had let Bellatrix catch him off guard; Perhaps she was right about love getting in the way, causing weakness and pain. But still, he knew deep down he wouldn't give it up for all the power in the world.
He cast the counter curse, his skin stinging from the aftermath of the hex, and glared at Bellatrix, trying to think of a curse horrible enough to throw at her. He heard Zara retort as she cast a Bat Bogey Hex, and his face flushed again with anger of his own as he remembered his situation and the previous anger flowed back. He was cheered slightly as the hex hit home. "Hey, it is an improvement!" he agreed, chuckling darkly as Bellatrix shielded her face. He took the opportunity to cast a jelly fingers hex on his cousin.
It felt good to let his anger out in a duel, and to be on the same side as Zara again for once... It felt good, but also reminded him of what he had thrown away. Would they ever be able to laugh together the way they used to? His heart twisted at the thought, and he pushed it away, putting all of his focus into the duel.

• GIVE ME A DISASTER GIVE ME AN EMERGENCY •STAND ME AT THE HEAD OF THE CRUSADE WITHOUT A REMEDY ; "Coward! Why don't you fight when people are paying attention to you?! You psychotic, dumb...UGH!"
The Bat Bogey Hex hit Bella square in the face and caused her bogey's to begin attacking her. Growling in frustration she swiped her wand through the air and stopped the disgusting attack. Really? How immature!
"Protego!" The shield charm successfully blocked Sirius's jelly-finger spell, but left her fingers tingling all the same. Done with the niceties she'd extended to her cousin by not physically harming them, Bella fell into her usual go to spells. Sending a conjunctivitis curse flying at Zara, she turned on her cousin and sent a second hoping that at least one of them would be hit. She wasn't passed using and unforgivable curse, but knowing cousin-dearest he would run off and tell Dumbledore or McGonagall or someone that she'd performed and "unforgivable" curse. Pain was beautiful. It did amazing things to a person - why then was it so unforgivable? "Expelliarmus!" She shouted after her conjunctivitis curse at Sirius. Turning her wand on the bench she shouted. "Expulso!" Using as many spells as she could to distract and harm them she giggled in glee as the bench next to Zara exploded with the force of her spell. Pieces flew everywhere which she redirected back at her cousin and the gryffindor brat instead of letting them hit her. "Unfortunately, for you Sirius, I don't think anything could improve about you. I'm not surprised your mother blasted you off the family tree - what a disappointment." Bella felt the rush that came with attacking others and reveled in it. She loved watching them suffer. It was like oxygen to her and when she wasn't cursing others she couldn't breathe. Growing up it had been survival of the fittest until finally it just became who she was. There was no turning back from this path. [/blockquote][/blockquote] Words;; 762 Notes;; Credit;; Woah, woah, woah! This beauty belongs to REASON of Caution 2.0! Please, Won't You Push Me For The Last Time? I'll Scream Until There's Nothing Left Sirius felt disappointment as Bellatrix blocked his hex. Then he saw the shift in his cousins face, and he knew what was coming just in time to brace himself. Then he saw Zara out of the corner of his eye. She didn't know what was coming like he did, he had dueled Bella many times before, and he then, in that split second accepted that all the sadness they had felt the past week was in fact his fault. "Protego!" he cried, shielding Zara, wanting more than anything to avoid her hurting ever again. All chaos broke loose.
Bellatrix was unstable, and Sirius would put nothing past her; He was on high alert, not scared, but weary. She fired curses everywhere, giggling like a madwoman. Had it not been for his energy and focus in the shield charm Sirius would have been able to block the conjunctivitus curse; He dropped the shield as he felt a intense pain in his eyes, and muttered the counter curse, swearing under his breath.
And then his wand flew out of his hand and slid across the floor. Sirius cursed again and then ran for it, eyes still stinging terribly, being pelted by stone and dodging any harm possible. He breathed relief as his fingers curled around the familiar handle of his wand. He turned just in time to block an oncoming jinx, his cheeks flushed with anger. This was going too far, and someone was going to end up in the hospital wing. He would rather it not be him. "Stupefy!" he cried, timing the curse roughly with one of Zara's so it would be very difficult for even Bellatrix to block both.

Zara was rather disappointed when she realised that Sirius' curse hadn't hit Bellatrix too, since it would be extremely funny to watch her fight back having being hit with two curses at once. What she wasn't prepared for, though, was the series of curses that Bellatrix had begun to hurl their way non-stop. And that none of them her affecting her the way they should be. With a pang in the stomach, she realised that Sirius had cast a protection charm.
"Silly boy, couldn't he just casted one for us both, or at least for himself," she muttered under her breath, feeling more guilty than ever when he got hit by the conjuctivitis curse. When she realised that Sirius was running for his own wand, she directed a protection charm at him, so that at least he would be safe from the pelting rocks.
In time with Sirius, she yelled "Reducto!" at Bellatrix. Not waiting to see if they had been sucessful or not, she began thinking of a way to hurt Bellatrix verbally. Oh, she was indeed a good dueller. But Zara wanted to find her weakness. She'd then use it to her advantage, just like Bellatrix has done to so many others. She didn't know what it was, but she was damn determined to find out.
"You know, Black, you seem to handle these curses pretty well. What, too many of them had been thrown your way since your were a baby? Is that why you're so damaged? Why your brain is so damaged?" she taunted her, refusing to let her guard down. "Oh wait, maybe they hadn't even wanted you! Maybe they wanted a baby boy, and all they got was a psychopath of a pathetic girl like yourself!" Zara knew she was treading on thin ice here, but duel be damned. It felt so good to let her steam off, to hurt someone, when she had been the one hurting for the past week. Plus, Zara was never nice with someone who hurts her. Or Sirius. She felt a teeny bit bad for using such words against Bellatrix...but she justified her words with the thought that it was just Bellatrix.
